Firefox beats IE on newmanva.com

browser stats
The stats are from the reporting package used on newmanva.com, Mint. Even though IE owns much more market share than Firefox, this clearly isn’t the case here. What does this say about our site visitors? Are they more technically evolved than the “average”? Or does it mean nothing at all?

How Equity Dilution Really Works

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Ken Gaebler has a great post (here) on how stock equity dilution really works. Ask the VC, (Foundry Group’s new-ish blog) get credit for sharing this one.

If you ever wondered how equity dilution really works, or if you own shares of a startup and want to see what they are really worth I recommend reading through this post as it contains the math and logic needed to add it all up. More importantly, understanding how dilution works will help you negotiate a much better deal when the time comes!

Venture Capital in the Rockies Redux

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Although I did not blog about it ahead of time, I was at Venture Capital in the Rockies (aka VCIR) this week. The event is a jam-packed one day conference that brings together VCs, companies and service providers. One of the goals of the event is to bring additional exposure of Colorado/Rockies-based investment opportunities to out of state VCs. VCIR also is a great way to see a lot of regional companies that are either already venture-backed or looking for funding. Great networking opportunity, and the venue is stellar too…

I was already familiar with a number of the companies presenting this year, but it was great to see their updated pitches and hear the Q&A sessions (even if many of the questions were more lobs than zingers). There were 30+ presenting companies and due to the 3 tracks I could not attend all of the sessions so I stuck to the IT/Internet services track primarily. What impressed me the most was that an entire track was filled with Biotech and Pharma companies. They are all local, more or less, and this is a great indicator of the level of activity in this space happening in this region. Who knew Colorado was a hotbed of Biotech!?!

The front range of Colorado is not silicon valley, but there is a broad and sophisticated array of startups in the area that cover everything from stock-video content (Thought Equity Motion) to carbon-fiber jet aircraft (Adam Aircraft). The biggest highlight of the event was the big-picture it provided…that is the fact that there are a healthy number of smart, motivated entrepreneurs starting great companies in this area. So if you are an investor on either coast sitting on your checkbook, take a closer look at the dealflow out here. Better quality of living, lower operational costs and motivated people are a good formula to create great companies!

Some of the more serious bloggers out there have already covered the event in detail for us. Here’s the short list:

  • David @ ColoradoStartups.com profiles several of the companies here
  • Daniel Primack of PE Week Wire/PE Hub has a VCIR hangover
  • Podcast of the media round table discussion held on Tuesday night (thanks David!)
  • Brad Feld’s summary (with several links back to ColoradoStartups.com too)
  • Seth Levine of Mobius/Foundry Group profiles a few presenters here

wordpress and mint upgrades

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

I just upgraded this blog’s WordPress installation from version 2.0.2 to 2.1. The upgrade went smoothly and took about an hour really. Some minor plugin wrangling was necessary to get everything humming again, but so far so good. HTML-edit mode wasn’t working in 2.0.2, and the new implementation in 2.1 fixes that. Aaah.

I use Mint for stats and just upgraded from version 1.x to 2.0 as well. That was equally easy to upgrade, and there are some cool new peppers (er, plugins in Mint-land) for 2.0. It’s a paid upgrade but is worth it. The author, Shaun Inman, has done a fantastic job with the software and there is quite the user & developer community growing around this product. I’m happy to support their efforts! BTW, there is a WordPress plugin for Mint that automatically adds the Mint code to every blog page.

Desi Hits! gets funded by Trident and DFJ

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

dh screen shotDesi Hits!, an NVA client company, recently closed its Series A funding round lead by Trident Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson(DFJ). Desi Hits! is a South Asian entertainment and lifestyle portal. I blogged about them recently as they launched an exciting new website earlier this year. The company is up to some very exciting things and already has a strong brand and a rapidly growing community. They are taking the Desi scene by storm, so keep an eye out.

Here’s a snippet from the PRWeb release (full release here)
“Unveiling a new website this month, rich in aggregated and original content, Desi Hits! brings together the “best of” internet technologies. The online community can watch exclusive celebrity interviews, music videos and streaming clips; listen to live and archived podcasts spinning the latest tracks by established and emerging artists; get the scoop via a variety of talk shows; read feature articles and artist profiles; interact on blogs and forums; even host their own show; also integrated into the programming is a platform that spotlights select up-and-coming talent.”

It has been an exciting ride for the company so far, starting out as a blogger.com site that grew and grew beyond expectations. Anjula and Ranj have a phenomenal eye for Desi entertainment and found a way to bring that to life in the form of podcasts and vidcasts! Check out the site, and stay tuned as the content is updated constantly!

Congrats to Anjula and Ranj on the funding and the success to date!
